Begin The Beguine
I feel compelled, at the outset, to revisit some basics and define “clutter” thus avoiding unnecessary and arbitrary misconceptions in the lines of “one man’s clutter is another man’s treasure” and other similar pearls of wisdom.
Decluttering is NOT random wholesale dumping of your entire possessions in an attempt to create ample space or in hopes of embracing a postmodern era of minimalistic lifestyle.
Decluttering, however, is ultimately about keeping items that are a joy to own and use.
So how does one ascertain the fate of such possessions with some clarity? I, for one, usually start things off by asking 5 distinct questions:
- Do you love this item?
- Do you honestly need it?
- Does it have some sort of significance in your life?
- Does it serve a purpose?
- If the item is no longer in your possession, would you repurchase it even at a higher price?
Now, try not to be hard on yourself as there aren’t right or wrong answers here, only input pertaining to your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
